Riya, I have read your First Impressions Journal
and I must say, I really enjoyed seeing your point of view in the novel. I personally
think your response was written very well, and all the plentiful ideas you had
really flowed well together into one strong argument. Overall, there weren’t
many things I would have liked to change in what you wrote.
The connections you made from historical
evidence and novel were definitely my favourite parts and possibility the
strongest idea in your response. Specifically, it was the part where you stated
resemblance between Winston Smith and Winston Churchill that brought a lot of
interest towards me. As you already know, I am a person who is very interested
in history. Therefore, I see your ability to connect to the past and imagine
the world during the time the novel was written, as very admirable and clever.
This truly brought me to the idea that Orwell wrote this book in 1949, to
indicate what could have happened in the future if the Russians won the Cold War,
and spread communism to the West.
Overall, I think you did an amazing job
with this assignment, and it really helped me discover new things I didn’t
notice about Winston Smith.
Sincerely, Your Friend Victor

Hi Victor,
For your
most memorable moment, I totally agree that this moment is very important when
understanding Winston’s job. His job is sort of confusing in the beginning of
the book, but this moment really helps the reader understand how much control
the government has. His job in changing facts like these, have probably played
a major part in why he hates the government system so much. It makes sense ‘cause
we know that Winston loves learning about the past, and changing it could have
sparked more hatred. It is interesting how you think that censorship is the
biggest symbol to show how powerful the government is. I always thought it was
intimidation, however censorship does make sense. Your post was very well
written, and it helped me view the different aspects of the story in a
different way.
From, Riya

Response to Victor’s First Impression Journal
Victor, I have read over your First Impression Journal, I find it’s appealing throughout your entire written journal. Your journal gives me another perspective of the novel “ 1984 ”, many thoughts and ideas are placed the journal. It seems like you wanted to apply your knowledge of history into your journal in certain places. Therefore, the thoughts and ideas placed in your journal could have been expand even more in a creative and logic way.
Some great written thoughts, especially where you stated there was two kind of governments that I considered it to be similar but different names, during the time when the book was written, I find that this part was interesting. I guess I didn’t pick up or notice the information about the governments. I liked the way, you tried to put the reader’s at different viewpoint showing the reader’s the comparison in short reading. More importantly, putting the reader’s in the author’s shoe while reading the novel.
What I agree with is your explanation of the tone about the novel. I was on the same page as you think negatively about novel at first, because I didn’t find much interest to be considered it was a little boring at first in the twenty pages.
Overall, I think you did an awesome job by adding critical thinking to your journal.
Your Friend,
Lesley
