My
name is Winston Smith, and I am the main character in the novel, 1984. I am currently a single male who
works in the Ministry of Truth, the part of my government that controls media.
Today
it was almost business as usual in work. I of course, needed to use the
speakwrite machine to edit some promises my government made. However, I had an
additional task of creating a hero which I named Comrade Ogilvy. It took a while,
but I think it was worth it and “Big Brother” will be pleased.
In
my lunch hour, I met up with my fellow comrade, Syme. He asked me if I still
had a few razor blades left. However, I didn’t have an extra one and I, myself am
sick of using the same razor blade for about 6 months now. Anyhow, he’s still
working on that dictionary of his in another department. I don’t really see how
this project will end up benefit us though. I personally believe that Oldspeack
is better. However, I think there will be a big stall of the development, since
Syme can be a suspect of “Big Brother” considering he is too smart and sees too
clearly.
Well
soon after, my neighbour Parson showed up in a nice mood. We eventually got
into a discussion about his kids who accused me yesterday of committing a
thought crime. Well it turns out he was happy to see that, since he wanted his
kids to be a part of the Thought Police. I honestly can’t believe he isn’t
scared of them though. I nearly had a heart attack yesterday. While I am happy
for my comrade, I have a feeling in my head that these kids might catch me one
day in committing a crime, so I guess I should be more cautious when I’m out.
Section 2: Lesley Kong
Section 2: Lesley Kong
My name is Winston Smith. I am a worker as the Ministry of Truth, and also the protagonist in this novel Nineteen Eighty - Four. Don’t you ever wish your wishes would come true? I don’t know how my thoughts came true.
To get more information about the Revolution who or what I thought would give me more information. I was impressed with this old man and how he can remember so much. His memory must be strong, I saw him chugged down a liter of gin. But I think the information he provided would be false. He tried to tell me every single detail during that time, but none of it was important. Maybe he was drunk from drinking all that gin, he just told random information of what experience when he was young. Although he lived during that time period, personally I thought the information he provided didn’t even relate to the topic at all.

I was looking for information about the Revolution in the children’s history textbook, but I couldn’t find much information. I took out the textbook, and I wanted to have a closer look at the information, if I was mistaken from last time, but the textbook seems to give facts, that were major parts during the Revolution. The textbook described that there is two levels of society at the time. Which I believed it would be true. There is three classes of society: upper class, middle class, and the lower class. However, the upper class which was the rich people were called capitalists and the lower class contains the poor people. The rich people would have thirty servants looking after them. This meant for the lower class to look after themselves. I noticed that top hats were not as popular any anymore. Whoever wore a top hat during the time period, would be considered wealthy. Top hats were the fashion line for men, for the wealthy family because they are the only one that could afford the hat. I assumed in today’s society, the upper class and the middle class, could say that owned the most properties. The upper class owned mostly everything. I think this state the fact that wealthy people controlled most part of the economy during the revolution, but now the economy is equally divided among the society classes. For example, houses, cars, and furthermore, were considered to be owned by capitalist.
However the history textbook neither the old man does not give any of these valuable information. If I got to chose to live in the past or the present, then I would rather live in the present day, mostly because everything has changed since the Revolution occurred. There is more benefits now than before. The information I gather now, might be useful for later on future use.
Interview a
character- by Riya Shah
Riya Shah-
Thank you Mr. Charrington for meeting with me, as I assure you that your
identity will not be disclosed to anybody else. If this interview is to be
published, your name will be anonymous.
Mr.
Charrington- Thank you for respecting my privacy, as we all know how important
it is for my identity to be a secret.
Riya Shah-
Well then, let’s get started. Did you know Winston Smith and Julia well?
Mr.
Charrington- They would come to the room I had above my shop very much. Winston
Smith came to buy a diary and some antiques before. That’s when I started to
suspect him. He told me things about hating the party but I didn’t have solid
evidence but now we do.
Riya Shah-
If he hadn’t done what he did, is there a possibility that you could’ve been
friends?
Mr.
Charrington- Absolutely not. It would go against everything the Party and the
Thought Police believe in.
Riya Shah-
It seems like he viewed you as a friend.
Mr.
Charrington- It’s my job to find people like Winston and his lover Julia. I can’t
be swayed by emotions. The law is the law.
Riya Shah-
Do you find any of the rules there are illogical?
Mr.
Charrington- No, the laws are there to protect the government from the people’s
anger.
Riya Shah-
Do you feel bad for turning them in?
Mr.
Charrington- No, I was only doing my job.
Riya Shah- Why
didn’t you turn them in sooner?
Mr.
Charrington- We needed more proof. O’Brien and I could only act when we had
enough proof.
Riya Shah-
Do you feel responsible for their separation, and for the torture that they
got?
Mr.
Charrington- Look, I already told you that this is my job. It’s what I have to
do to survive, and provide for my family. They committed the crime, so they
deserved what they got. This interview is over.
